Kylie Chan – White Tiger May 9, 2007

Posted by taryn in don't bother, fantasy.

Ok, why? David/Ellen, why?

Even though I haven’t finished this book, I feel compelled to write a brief review as David has chosen to propose about six books!

I am really struggling to get into this book. Maybe its because of the clumsy language. Maybe its because I have actually lived in HK and know the places the author is writing about — ahem –trying to describe.

Actually, I think its because the story line is so predicatable and cheesy. Nanny in love with her boss who is going to teach her magical judo? Please.

Anyways I am going to read it dammit as I ordered it from Australia – but if you were considering buying it, I would say don’t bother.

Note: I have given up at chapter 3. The sad news is that there is a book two.

I will send them to my 14 year old sister and see if she likes them…

Hi Taryn,

I concede that my writing is clumsy (I’m a storyteller first and foremost and yes my prose isn’t my strong point) and that “White Tiger” seems extremely formulaic in the first few chapters.

Please, give the book another go. You might be pleasantly surprised. Giving up in the third chapter, I feel, really isn’t giving me a fair go, particularly when you write a scathing review based on those three chapters.

The story really doesn’t start galloping until book two and I really believe the conclusion will surprise you. So how about another try, if you still don’t like it (as I don’t really expect you will, to be honest, I appreciate that my storytelling isn’t to everybody’s taste), then I will concede defeat, lay down my Microsoft Word forever, go cry in a corner, and disappoint everybody who’s asked me when book four is coming out.

Or not.

Thanks for your message, Kylie. If a book doesn’t grab me, I don’t read it. There are a load on my list that I have yet to read. Yes, it may have been harsh to judge your books/writing by the first three chapters, but that’s just what my experience was. And I’m in it for an enjoyable experience, from the beginning. Not because if I get through this book the next one will be my reward.

I bought your book after it was recommended from some friends who really liked it and suggested it as a book club book. I did give the trilogy to my sister, who really enjoyed it and lives in Hong Kong. I just didn’t like it.

Cheers, Taryn
